Menu Categories

Categories organize your menu items into logical groups that display as sections on your menu boards. Examples include "Appetizers," "Draft Beer," "Wine," "Entrees," or "Desserts."

Creating a Category

  1. Navigate to Menu Categories in the sidebar.
  2. Click Add Category.
  3. Enter the category details:
FieldRequiredDescription
NameYesThe category name displayed on your menu board
LocationYesWhich location this category belongs to
Sort OrderNoControls the display order (lower numbers appear first)
ActiveYesWhether this category is currently visible
  1. Click Save.

Editing a Category

  1. Go to Menu Categories.
  2. Click Edit next to the category you want to modify.
  3. Update the fields and click Save.

Deleting a Category

  1. Go to Menu Categories.
  2. Click Delete next to the category.
  3. Confirm the deletion.

Note: Deleting a category will remove it from any menu board sections that reference it. Menu items in the category will not be deleted but will become uncategorized.

POS-Synced Categories

If you have connected a POS system (such as Square), your categories are synced automatically from your POS catalog.

When a POS connection is active:

  • Categories are marked with a green POS badge indicating their source.
  • You can rename a POS-synced category in Tapboard. Double-click the name in the category list (or use the edit pencil) and save. Your rename is stored as an override and persists across syncs, so the new name stays even after the next POS sync. An edited badge appears next to the name as a reminder, and hovering it shows the original POS name.
  • You can change the active/inactive status of a POS-synced category. Hover the status pill and pick Active or Inactive — your choice is stored as an override and persists across syncs.
  • You cannot delete a POS-synced category from Tapboard. To remove one, delete it in your POS and re-sync; Tapboard will deactivate it automatically.
  • To roll a category back to its POS values, open the category and click Revert to POS values (or use the revert icon next to the row).
  • New categories added in your POS appear in Tapboard after the next sync.
  • Categories removed from your POS are deactivated in Tapboard.

You can still create local categories alongside your POS-synced ones. However, on the first POS sync, existing local categories are deactivated so that your POS catalog becomes the source of truth. After the connection is active, local categories become read-only in Tapboard — to manage menu data, edit it in your POS or rename/toggle the POS-synced category instead.
